GenOUT Youth Chorus

The GenOUT Youth Chorus is the Washington, DC area’s only vocal ensemble for social justice warriors. Under the direction of C. Paul Heins, GenOUT is an outreach ensemble of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC. GenOUT operates under a two-fold mission: to give LGBTQ+ and allied youth a voice through song, and to connect that voice to community.

The ensemble is open to all singers between the ages of 13 and 18. Since its debut in spring 2015, more than 180 singers from over 75 schools have participated in GenOUT. In Fall 2025, 16 singers from schools in and around the DC area are singing in GenOUT.

In addition to their annual Youth Invasion concert and mainstage shows with GMCW, GenOUT maintains an active calendar of outreach performances, singing at venues such as the Kennedy Center, Washington National Cathedral, the White House, the Library of Congress, GALA Choruses Festivals, and the national conference of the American Choral Directors Association, plus numerous faith communities, schools, and public events around the DMV area. Last year, GenOUT won the Ovation Award in the category of “Proactive Community Outreach” from the Choralis Foundation.

Suede

Vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Suede tours nationally, from Feinstein’s in San Francisco; Birdland in NYC; Blues Alley and The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and beyond. Her PBS special Live at Scullers Jazz Club has currently aired on 54 stations nationally during their on air fundraisers to keep PBS thriving.

Her recording of Shirley Eikhard’s “Emily Remembers” was the number one song of the year on WJZW radio and has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Alzheimer’s research and support.

With a strong belief in the responsibility that any degree of celebrity carries she’s played countless benefits for various causes, helping to raise $45,000 in one night for a free clinic outside of Washington, DC; $100,000 to create the first endowed professorship for Sexual & Reproductive Rights at City University of NY and countless benefits for LGBTQ causes of all sorts. She is THRILLED to collaborate today with NWYT and GenOUT!

Not What You Think

Not What You Think is an a cappella ensemble that performs varied and diverse pop, light jazz, and folk music, and was originally affiliated with the Lesbian & Gay Chorus of DC. The members share a core belief that, as gay men and lesbians singing together, they have an opportunity and responsibility to effect change and to open hearts and minds. Not What You Think works for equality and social justice through song and humor and hopes for the day our music can reflect a world at peace.
