The GenOUT Chorus is the Washington, DC area’s first-ever vocal ensemble for LGBTQ youth and their allies. It operates under the two-fold mission: (1) to give young LGBTQ+ and allied youth a voice, and (2) to connect that voice to community. The ensemble is open to all singers between the ages of 13 and 18. Since its debut in spring 2015, the GenOUT Chorus has performed at the Lincoln Theatre, the Kennedy Center, Washington National Cathedral, the White House, and the GALA Choruses Festival. More than 60 singers, from over three dozen schools, have participated in GenOUT. In the 2017-18 season, 25 singers from sixteen schools in and around the DC metro area sang in GenOUT.
FAQ's About GenOUT
Q: Who can sing in GenOUT?
A: GenOUT is open to all young people ages 13-18: LGBTQ+ and allies.
Q: Do I have to audition?
A: No, GenOUT is non-auditioned. All that is needed is a love of singing and a commitment to be part of the progress of the ensemble.
Q: When can new members join?
A: New members can join during GenOUT Camp (third week of July), at the first two rehearsals in September, and at the first two rehearsals in January.
Q: How often does GenOUT perform?
A: We perform at GMCW’s mainstage concerts (December, March, and June), as well as on our own concert called Youth Invasion (in April). Additionally, we perform around a dozen outreach performances throughout the season (September-June).
Q: How much does it cost to be in GenOUT?
A: Registration for the entire year is $150. Singers joining in January pay $90. No one is turned away for an inability to pay the registration fee. We have scholarships available up to 100%.
Q: What music does GenOUT sing?
A: GenOUT sings a wide variety of music, from folk songs to pop and musical theater to songs in the classical tradition. Sometimes we sing in foreign languages, and each season we select at least one song to integrate with sign language. On stage, we usually sing from memory.
Q: What do you wear at performances?
A: At our mainstage and outreach concerts, we usually wear all black with rainbow ties (see photo on right). We provide the ties. Sometimes, we wear our GenOUT tee-shirts (about $25; scholarships available) with dark blue jeans. For outdoor performances like the Pride Parade and Festival, we usually wear our GenOUT tee-shirts and khaki-colored shorts.
Q: When do you rehearse?
A: We rehearse Saturday mornings, 9:30-11:30 AM. A few times a year, we have a Sunday evening rehearsal (4:30-6:30 PM) to practice joint repertoire with GMCW. We also have two retreats each year – fall and winter – each held on a Saturday, 9:30 AM-8:00 PM.
Q: What if I have more questions?
A: Contact GenOUT Director C. Paul Heins, by e-mail at email@example.com, or by phone at (202) 293-1548.
Each year, GenOUT hosts a week-long day camp for current and potential singers. Activities include singing, choreography, creative writing, group discussions, guest presentations, and outdoor activities. Campers learn about LGBTQ+ history, get a head start on repertoire for the next season, and work together to create and perform an end-of-week performance. In the middle of the week, we take a field trip, to such places as the Washington National Opera’s costume shop, the Anacostia Community Museum, the DC City Government Building, the US Capitol, and the Library of Congress.
